Football Recruiting 101 – College Coaches

College coaches are bombarded year around with letters, emails and phone calls from parents and athletes looking to play football in college. They are on information overload! The question is how does a football prospect get the attention of a college coach?

You get the attention from college coaches by standing out from the crowd of athletes flooding into the system. All college coaches really want to know is what can you do for them. College coaches are looking for game changers and play makers. As a prospective college football athlete you must do all that you can do to improve your speed, agility and strength. Hire a personal trainer, go to camps & combines and work at it year around. You must keep in mind that you have a ton of competition out there.

The next thing a college coach is looking for in an athlete is how does he perform in the classroom. At the D1 level you are talking about a “Full-Ride” scholarship worth $20,000 or more a year. Do you think the college coach and the college or university are going to risk that kind of money on a 2.0 GPA athlete? College athletes carry a heavy load with practice, studies, traveling and so on. The likelihood of those kinds of academic students staying eligible are not very good. Often times they just flunk out of school and are headed back home.

The third thing that a college coach looks for is character. Coaches judge character by the amount of community service and extracurricular activities a prospect has been involved in. Outstanding character is huge, and will separate you from the competition, all other things being equal. I can’t stress enough how important it is to work in the community and serve at your high school and church. If you are involved in the arts or music it’s a big plus with lots of federal money to be had in financial aid at particularly the D111 level. In closing remember once again the college coach and the college or university want to know what you can bring to the table for them. GOOD LUCK!
